The nation’s 500 biggest revenue-generating businesses produced a total of $20.4 trillion in revenue during the 2025 fiscal year, an annual increase of nearly 3%, according to the recently released 2026 Fortune 500 rankings. That revenue figure represents nearly two-thirds of the nation’s gross domestic product. The companies that made it onto the Fortune 500 list this year are headquartered in 226 cities across 37 states and fall within 106 apartment markets based on lines defined by RealPage Market Analytics. The number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the top 10 RealPage Market Analytics markets remained the same in the 2026 rankings compared to 2025’s list. New York continues to lead with 49 companies generating a combined $1.8 trillion in revenue, followed by Chicago (30 headquarters) and Houston (26 companies). Tech-driven San Jose ranks #4 with 21 Fortune 500 headquarters totaling $1.5 trillion in revenue, anchored by Apple and Alphabet. Washington, D.C. had 20 companies on the list, while Dallas boasted 19. Minneapolis and Atlanta tied with 15 headquarters each. San Francisco and Boston tied at #9 with 14 Fortune 500 companies each. The top three companies on the list were Amazon, Walmart and UnitedHealth. Located in the Seattle apartment market, Amazon made $716.9 billion in revenue last year. Walmart, headquartered in Fayetteville, AR, made $713.2 billion in revenue in 2025. UnitedHealth, located in Minneapolis, made $447.6 billion.
